About

Annie Pichan is a professional performer, voice teacher and vocal coach dedicated to helping singers and speakers develop voices that are healthy, expressive, and memorable.

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Annie was immersed in a rich musical culture shaped by jazz, blues, soul, pop, and rock. She began performing professionally at a young age, appearing at venues including MotorCity Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and on the court for the Detroit Pistons, while also recording commercial vocals for national brands including Honda and Chevrolet.

Annie earned her Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music in 2013 before relocating to New York City, where she built an active career as both a performer and educator. She has performed at venues including Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery Electric, Sofar Sounds, and Carnegie Hall with Ted Sperling's MasterVoices, and has been featured on Montez Press Radio, broadcasting from New York City and London. She also composed, co-produced, and released her debut EP in 2019, Paint My Lover, a genre-blending collaboration of pop, opera, and electronic music. Its accompanying music video was selected for international film festivals in Prague, Los Angeles, and Austin, Texas in 2020.

As an educator, Annie is driven by a deep curiosity for the mechanics and coordination of the human voice as an instrument. Rather than relying on one-size-fits-all methods or exercises, she draws upon evidence-based voice pedagogy, vocal acoustics, student-led learning, and motor learning to identify the most effective strategies to help optimize each individual voice.

As founder and director of The Vocal Lab NYC (2014–2023), Annie led a team of fifteen instructors while mentoring singers, performers, and professionals from across the United States and abroad. The Vocal Lab's mission was simple: to bring the principles of Evidence-Based Voice Pedagogy (EBVP) into mainstream voice instruction by assembling a faculty trained at some of the nation's leading voice pedagogy programs, including Shenandoah Conservatory, Westminster Choir College, Columbia University, New York University, and Oberlin Conservatory, to name a few.

Committed to lifelong learning, Annie continues to study with many of today's leading voices in contemporary pedagogy. Her professional development includes:

  • Bachelor of Music, Berklee College of Music

  • Classical Voice Studies, The Juilliard School Evening Division (Kurt Alakulppi)

  • Voice Pedagogy Certifications, Westminster Choir College (2018 & 2020)

  • Voice Teaching Practicum, Dr. Kari Ragan

  • Level I Certified, Somatic Voicework™: The LoVetri Method

  • Acoustic Vocal Pedagogy Course, Ian Howell, Kenneth Bozeman, and Chadley Ballantyne

  • Voice Production Mentorship, Carrie Pichan, Ph.D. Candidate in Phonetics, University of Illinois Chicago

  • Voice Pedagogy Mentorship, Dr. Laura Rushing-Raynes, Boise State University

  • Member, National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS)

Today, Annie teaches private and semi-private voice lessons for singers ages 10 and older in both classical (beginner/intermediate) and Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) styles (all levels).

She also coaches executives, litigators, educators, politicians, and public speakers who want to communicate with greater clarity, confidence, and presence.

Whether her clients are preparing for auditions, collegiate voice programs, professional performances, high-stakes presentations, or simply singing for the joy of it, Annie approaches every lesson with curiosity, compassion, joy, and precision.
